Navigating and accessing services essential to support the role of unpaid cares can present a huge challenge amplified by living in a rural community, limitations on time and overwhelming amount and nature of information. The Carer Connect Roadshow was designed to bring service and information providers and unpaid carers together, to allow a friendly and easy exchange of information and support.
Twenty-two community organisations from across South West Victoria participated in the Carer Connect Roadshow in February, offering advice and information around respite options, local support services, practical support and information, wellbeing activities and even a visit from a therapy dog or two. Up to 80 carers visited the roadshow throughout the afternoon. Frequent prize draws, gift bags, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere kept carers engaged for the duration of the afternoon.
It was not just the carers engaging with services; the roadshow provided a unique and valuable opportunity for service providers to strengthen relationships with each other.
Overall carers were incredible satisfied with the roadshow, stating the main benefits were the social connection and meeting other carers a relaxed, fun environment, access to helpful services, and the opportunity to feel understood, appreciated, and recognised.
